In order for the Massachusetts ME/CFS & FM Association to meet its mission, it is necessary to maintain an active membership roster.  Not only are membership dues a critical component of our operating revenue, but the size of our membership matters when we advocate for services, legislation, and other actions to improve the lives of individuals with ME/CFS and related illnesses.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Membership Program?

At our founding in 1985, we incorporated as a membership-based non-profit in order to promote the mutual support nature of our Association. Membership allows us to buid a strong community of diverse needs, circumstances, and voices.  As a membership organization, we are required to report annually to our members, and members must approve appointment of our Board of Directors.

Why is membership important?

An Association of dues-paying members demonstrates to legislative and social service representatives the importance of listening and addresing our advocacy actions. Membership allows us to get to know one another, strengthen our bonds of mutual support, and share a feeling of belonging and hope for the future.

What are the member benefits provided by MassME?

All members, regardless of financial contribution, are entitled to the following benefits:

  • Nominate candidates to serve on the Board of Directors
  • Vote on Board membership
  • Attend open Board meetings
  • Request special meetings of the membership
  • Participate in confidential, member-only discussion forums
  • Receive early registration invitations for capacity-limited activities, such as support groups and special seminars
  • Attend all Association events free of charge
  • Access member-only information and services through the member portal
How much should I allocate for my membership dues?

When we began in 1985, our dues were $25. In 2020, the demand was so great for our services that we made the great leap to hiring professional staff and we raised our dues to $40. Recognizing the heavy burden annual dues may pose to some of our members, we have always had a sliding scale and courtesy memberships. However, many of our members give more than the stated dues, recognizing the value of our services and the cost of providing them. In 2024, the average annual dues we received was approximately $120. Please set your dues at a level you are comfortable with.

Do members have any commitments to the Association?

The only commmittment we ask for is to engage with any aspect of our work that interests you as your energy envelope allows. If engagment for you is simply reading our on-line newsletter, that’s fine. No one will bother you to be any more involved than that.

I cannot afford to donate even $1. But I want to show my commitent by becoming a member. Is this possible?

Absolutely! Many of us Are living on Social Security Disability Income and can have limited resources. We get it. Just fill in our Courtesy Membership form.

What can I expect to happen once I become a member?

Once you complete the Membership Form, you will receive an email receipt, followed by a welcome email containing new member information and a link to our new member survey. The survey will provide an oportunity for you to share any information about yourself and your interests that you wish us know.

Can I become a member even if I do not live In Massachusetts?
